Located in Oceanside, California, this old mission stands tall and is a thing of beauty. I would love to paint all the California missions but that will probably never happen. Instead, I pick a mission now and then to paint and that keeps me happy. I have visited several of the California missions and walking through these wonderful old structures truly makes one feel the history. I love them.

This cute little dog lays its head flat on the floor as it appears it is being scolded. Even though it is in trouble, the dog's big eyes and sad look will get it out of trouble—and he knows it. Ink and watercolor.

This is a recent painting of Manzanita Lake with Mt. Lassen in the background. At this time of the year, Mt. Lassen should be covered with snow as should this lake area. The snow has not come yet. The ground is dry, the underbrush is orange and brown and the evergreens are very thirsty. Colder and snowy weather is predicted soon. Let’s hope we get lots of snow and colder weather as we near the beginning of winter. Ink and watercolor.

This building is typical of the many old buildings in our town. While the building shows some detail, most of the other elements are intentionally in whimsical mode with loosely drawn figures, a vehicle-make that is unknown, weird-looking animal under a chair, funky birds atop the building and a very uneven sidewalk. At times, it’s fun to draw and paint and not worry about being exactly accurate. Ink and watercolor. SOLD

Still life paintings are fun to do. The actual pots have their own look and colors but I change them as I build my own impression. I also add items for interest like the little green plant coming from one of the pots. Unlike a photograph, a painting can be changed to offer viewers a more personal touch and vision from the artist. Enjoy this simple little still life. Ink and watercolor.

Most of you probably love the wonderful, easy-to-eat candy treat known as M and Ms. I like to munch on them like the rest of you. On this day, however, I decided to draw them and not eat any. This little piece of art took less than an hour to complete. This simple little art was produced with ink pens and watercolor washes. Once you view this, I‘ll bet you go buy some!!

In this painting, a man walks his dog in the peaceful surroundings of a very colorful city park. Hints of buildings are seen in the background which denotes that this park is in mid-city. The brilliant reds in the trees and shrubs give this scene more impact and suggest summer is gone and fall is ahead. Watercolor. SOLD

A remote country side like this is sometimes difficult to draw and paint to get much attention. There is not much there and for most of the year not much color is seen. I used my pens for most of this sketch with watercolor washes used at a minimum. I added more color to the huge rock formations and only hints of green to areas of living plants and trees. Ink and watercolor.

Every now and then I do paintings that I think will look particularly good in note cards. This is one of those paintings. I have made note cards using this image and they look great. We are using them as party invites and I will be selling these at my upcoming fall arts and craft shows. You can purchase by clicking "Purchase My Art" link or by contacting me directly via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Ink and watercolor. SOLD

Every little town has a cantina it seems. This painting shows a quiet street and a cantina in the middle of town where people meet to eat and drink. Long shadows show it may be late afternoon. A few cars and a few people dot the main street in this lonely little town. This scene could be in Mexico or on the southern border of the USA. Watercolor.

This countryside painting has a little of everything. Trees, mountains, homes , large structures, vineyards, a lonely road plus lots of color. I viewed a photo of a countryside but changed and added my twists to develop the painting. Ink and watercolor. SOLD

Old empty bottles are filled with color in this painting. They also show transparency, shading and highlighting. A subtle wash eliminates a stark white background. This scene shows the tranquility in the early morning hours in mid-summer. An early-riser is out and about tending to the boats in preparation for a day of fishing on the lake. Watercolor. SOLD

Giant redwoods grow steadily deep in the forest. This serene scene may give us pause to relax and reminds us to slow down to a slower pace. This watercolor painting was grabbed by my wife and now hangs in our home. SOLD

I am ready for fresh tomatoes. I planted my tiny plants around May 1. I have three plants growing fast and each have green tomatoes sprouting. I hope my harvest is better than last year. My little sketch shows I am happy the growing season is here. Warmer weather is also here. Ink and watercolor.

A beautiful country lake sits in the foreground as a broken down old fence crosses its shoreline. Magical mountains, spectacular cloud formations and bits of sunlight show through to add some more beauty to this nature scene. Watercolor. SOLD

This flower is called a White Plumeria. It is native to many tropical environments. The Plumeria is related to the Oleander and possesses an irritant to humans. Contact with the sap may irritate eyes and skin. Observers must be aware!!! Ink and watercolor.

This colorful butterfly is enjoying its leisure time by bouncing from flower to flower slurping up the food mother nature provides. I made the colors more brilliant on this monarch than they are in real life but maybe that made it more noticeable than it wants to be. The painting is more exciting when enhanced. This butterfly will continue to enjoy life by bothering nobody and remaining quiet. Ink and watercolor.

This scene looks cold as winter appears to be near. The blue mountains are not covered with heavy snow yet. Snow has fallen already as shown in the foreground. River water looks cold and still. A snow storm could be here soon. Watercolor. SOLD

This painting was done for a friend of ours. She likes Victorian homes so I produced this for her. A dramatic sky seems to liven up this old home along with its paint scheme. There are so many of these beautiful homes in existence. The detail in their construction is amazing. For an artist, a building like this takes a while to produce. Ink and watercolor. SOLD

This colorful watercolor impression was fun to do. The village buildings make no sense structurally, so don't look too closely, but my intent was to put in shapes and colors only to give the impression of a small village. This painting is framed and hanging in our home. It's amazing how a nice a painting can look once it's framed. Watercolor.

A beautiful sunrise brightens this lake and surrounding countryside as early morning will soon give way to a spectacular day. Clouds in the eastern sky are illuminated by the sun and reflect on the still lake waters which have barely a ripple in the calm. I had recently framed this watercolor painting and soon after, it was purchased. SOLD

I produced this small painting after I watched a demonstration by David Lobenberg at a Lincoln Hills Painters Group meeting. David produced a large painting of this for his demonstration. Totally motivated, I went home and produced my own version as I tried to remember all the steps he showed us. I am pleased with my end product showing country storage tanks after a rainstorm. Watercolor.

This beautiful restored truck sits on the premises of Simonian Farms in Fresno, California. We stopped by last October to visit Dennis and Bonnie and it was great to see them and all the new additions to their properties. From photographs, I recreated this old 1937 Ford truck into an ink and watercolor painting and sent it as a gift. SOLD Visit their Facebook site at

These early morning scenes seem cool and calm before the heat of the day. Soon, the dry, dusty winds will roll through as the day heats up. Usually, in the afternoon, drenching rains will soak the landscape to take the sting off the stiffling heat. Watercolors.

This colorful image was painted from a photograph taken September 2012 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. The photo was snapped in the afternoon on a beautiful sunny day. The Empress has been in existence for many years and has gone through several modifications. To see it in person is special. It is majestic. Ink and watercolor.

This edge of town image shows some buildings of a small town that may have been very active a long time ago. Now the town is empty except for a few broken down stuctures and critters running around. It is off the beaten path. The roadway through town was the main road through the country but has been replaced by a major freeway miles away. The saloon probably holds a tarnished past where townspeople came to let their hair down. Ink and watercolor.

The moon glimmers behind the clouds in this evening scene at a quiet lake. This watercolor painting was done simply and quickly and I like the way it turned out. Final touches include "lifting" color for the distant tree trunks and foreground grasses. Hint of white added to foreground trees and rocks with conte crayons. SOLD

This is a quick, small painting of the area near Cathedral Lake in the Yosemite valley. Quiet and serene, only the echos of birds and animals and the wind through the trees are heard here. SOLD

The sun will soon appear above the distant mountains. Its colors are already reflected on the still water which seems to be at low tide since I see so many rocks. Looks like it's gonna be a glorious day. Watercolor.

These wetlands scenes are typical of those seen in the areas west of Sacramento. At sunrise or sunset colorful clouds and sky make for beautiful scenery. I had two narrow frames so I did these paintings to fit into them. They look good framed. Can't get much simpler than these watercolor paintings.

This beautiful, colorful pine cone hangs amongst the branches of a pine tree. I have always liked pine cones and while growing up there was an abundance of pine trees. We would gather the pine nuts from the cones, crack the shells and feast on the sliver of nut pulled from the shell. Not much nut to eat but we collected so many pine nuts we could feast to our hearts content. Ink and watercolor. SOLD

This winter scene at sundown was painted in a workshop I took from David Lobenberg in December 2012. I feel the painting turned out well and it shows the cold of winter but also has enough color to make the painting more interesting. This painting is all watercolor except for the use of some conte crayon for the highlights. SOLD

Mission Dolores is located in San Francisco, California and was founded in 1776. I have drawn and painted one of the domes of this mission. First, I drew a semi-detailed image of the dome in pencil. After, I used an Ultra Fine Line Sharpie over the pencil draft. Then I came in with the washes starting with the loose sky and clouds. Adding watercolor washes over the structure area was done last. Ink and watercolor.
