Golden Hills Of California

These golden hills are beautiful. In summer, the dry grasses surround the green oak trees providing an interesting contrast to thousands of acres of green crops growing on the valley floor. After the winter rains, the grasses then change to stunning greens until the heat of summer changes the colors back again. It's an annual cycle that never ends. Ink and watercolor.

Autumn Color

I am looking up into the trees on this nice autumn day. The sun is shining through the leaves showing more colors than the eye can imagine. Soon the leaves will be gone and bare limbs and trunks will show clearly. Winter is next. Ink and watercolor.

Mama And Baby Polar Bears

Two polar bears seem content in a far off land where it is very cold. It looks like they may have had a nice meal and could be ready for a long nap. Today, unlike in the past, bears do not have as many chunks of ice to float on. Without this ice they cannot reach their prey. Change in climate is the greatest risk to these beautiful animals.

A Forest Path

A path snakes its way through trees and shrubs that are gleaming with autumn colors in a congested forest. Soon, all the leaves will drop and branches will be naked and ready for cold winter temperatures. Watercolor. SOLD

Church Street

While on the internet, I came across an image of a quiet neighborhood with a huge church at the end of the street. It is somewhere in Europe. I liked the neat look of the row of homes and was struck by the huge church in the background so I painted the scene. Seemed odd for the church to be so close to the homes but close it is. Even though it is a sunny day, the bare trees behind the structures let us know its winter time. Watercolor.

Happy New Year

My first painting of the year shows a quiet neighborhood at night during a winter snowfall. My painting also suggests “wishful thinking” on my part because we in northern California are not receiving rain or snow as we normally do. Typically, we would have had a decent amount of rain and the mountains would be packed with snow by now. Hopefully, the month of January will begin to bring us some precipitation. We need the snowpack so our lakes will fill up and be ready for the warm summer months. Enjoy my watercolor. I hope you have a happy and prosperous 2014.

Cold Winter Sunset

This winter scene at sundown was painted in a workshop I took from David Lobenberg in December 2012. I feel the painting turned out well and it shows the cold of winter but also has enough color to make the painting more interesting. This painting is all watercolor except for the use of some conte crayon for the highlights. SOLD

Sweater Weather

Colorful skyscrapers provide the background for this winter scene in a big city. I decided to leave many of the windows off the buildings. Sometimes a few windows are as effective as showing all the windows. The snow has fallen and people are walking along the slushy roadway to and from the city which could be through a city park. The leafless trees and snow on the ground show it is mid-winter. Ink and watercolor. SOLD

Snow Field

The phenomenon of the passing of the seasons is everlasting. In this scene, winter has set in. The snow has stopped falling, the snow on the ground has muffled most sounds and the home in the background is a lonesome sign of life in the area.

Majestic Oak

A majestic oak tree in February looks strong and healthy even though it has no leaves in the midst of winter. The day was gray with the sun showing through slightly which was enough to give some shadows. Winter has expired. The warmth of spring is about to begin. Soon, this huge oak will sprout in brilliant green leaves and will be ready for the long, warm part of the year. Ink and watercolor.

The Edge Of Color

Two deer graze peacefully in an opening on a meadow next to a densely populated forest. The greenery of trees in the foreground is framed by the color of the leaves in the background trees. In this painting, I played with masking out all of the tree trunks then came back and painted the trunks in various shades as needed. This is the time of year that trees do their amazing change once again. Some trees keep their leaves, some trees change to beautiful colors before they drop their leaves for the winter ahead. Ink and watercolor.

Winter Trees

The look of this scene is nothing but COLD. This is a winter scene as the sun sets in the evening. With snow on the ground the last place you need to be is out in this environment. The bare trees show it is dead of winter. On days like this it's nice to be tucked away in your home with a fire in the fireplace burning. 8" x 10", ink and watercolor. SOLD
