Mission Santa Barbara

This old mission is located in southern California near the city of Santa Barbara. Many of the California missions were destroyed by fire or earthquakes since originally being built. This one was damaged by earthquakes and rebuilt and fortified. It still serves the community as a parish church and remains a major attraction for the city of Santa Barbara. Ink and watercolor.

California Mission-Santa Ines

This mission is located in southern California by Solvang which is near Santa Barbara. An earthquake in 1812 destroyed most of this structure but it was reconstructed and still is standing tall today. The structure is number 19 of the 21 missions in the state. It remains an active parish and has a museum, gift shop and information center. The old missions are fun to visit. Ink and watercolor.

Old School House

Ink and wash rendering of an old school house in southern California east of Solvang near Santa Barbara. I drew this from a book illustrated by Earl Thollander called Backroads of California. Earl passed away in 2001. He was a tremendous illustrator who could use many mediums but did much of his work with a bamboo pen and india inks. He had the ability to make something out of nothing with his style. His strong use of tonal values, loose drawing style and his notes made the reader of his books feel like they were actually at the site while he was drawing.

Drawn from an image by Earl Thollander from his book Backroads of California, Sunset, 1988.
