Galloping Horses

I drew this black and white image of a galloping horse. Upon completing the art, I scanned the image. Using Photoshop Elements 10, I added some color to the bottom two images.  The effects are interesting and much better with color rather than just the black and white original version.

Orange Path

This clearing in the woods is rich in color. I began the painting with yellows and oranges over the entire background done wet in wet. Once the background dried, I layered in the distant woodlands in subdued greens. As I moved forward, the greenery and trees become more intense and I really like the orange on the path. The tree shadows were added last and made this painting "pop". My final strokes were adding "whites" on the trees and grasses by pulling off the existing watercolors.

Night Lights

This night scene somewhere over snow-covered mountains is highlighted by the aurora borealis which lights the sky. This quiet scene typifies a cold winter night that could be someplace like Canada. Wherever it is these lights make for a beautiful setting.

Snow At Sunset

As the sun lowers in the western sky, brilliant colors bounce off the snowy landscape and a lonely barn. The upcoming night will be cold because the skies have cleared which will allow the temperatures to lower. Luckily, we do not live where we get any snow. Scenes like this are only nice when you are toasty inside your home--and not having to drive somewhere. FOR SALE, 11" x 14" original, matted, $40, $5 shipping, use PayPal. Ink and watercolor.

Speaking Of Grapes

Luscious, plump grapes ready for harvest and ready to be plucked from the grape vine for eating. These mature grapes are so sweet and are so easy to eat. And if they are not eaten off the vines by me, maybe they can be used to make some great wine. Ink and watercolor. SOLD

The River At Yosemite

This is a late summer view of the river flowing through Yosemite National Park. The water flow is low and slow. The setting is warm, quiet and peaceful. I have only been to Yosemite once, but it is one of my favorite places to visit. FOR SALE, 11" x 14" original, matted, $90, $5 shipping, use PayPal. Ink and watercolor. SOLD

Los Angeles Neighborhood

Colorful homes, stairways, hills, dogs running loose, and flower gardens remind me of a typical Los Angeles neighborhood. This unrealistic painting was done loosely and while some homes might not be things of beauty, I made them colorful and crooked just to add interest.

River At Sunset

Leafless trees surround a river's path as the quiet waters meander past. The brilliant sunset is there because a storm is a brewing. FOR SALE, 11" x 14" original, matted, $90, $5 shipping, use PayPal. Watercolor.

Early Morning

Misty skies add to this serene scene near a lake's edge. It is early in the morning and all is quiet. The sun will soon appear as it fights its way through the damp mist. The water is cool and still. There is very little noise. Creatures are there but are quiet. Fish pluck the water's surface causing barely a ripple. Ink and watercolor.

Happy Halloween

I am presenting these paintings to get you all in the mood to celebrate Halloween. During my trick or treat years, many times it seemed like it always rained so we could not go out and earn our stash of sweets, fruits and goodies to the fullest. We always felt like we were getting hosed because our parents would not let us go out in the rain to get soaked and maybe become ill. Ink and watercolor.

Siesta Time

This painting is totally unlike my normal style. Colorful and whimsical, this scene shows a Mexican fellow taking his siesta under a stylized cactus-type plant. Everything is done in a simple style which is very difficult for me to do. Ink and watercolor. SOLD

Bear In The Trees

This painting displays the wonderful, brilliant colors that we will now see as the weather turns cooler and the heat of summer disappears. My focus on this painting was the trees and leaves but to add more interest I added a little bear who has meandered into this grove of trees. I hope you enjoy the colors of autumn and my friendly bear. Ink and watercolor.

Lassen And Almanor

During the month of June this year, we visited Lassen National Park and surrounding areas. Spent the night at a bed and breakfast in Chester, and dined on the patio of a nice restaurant along Lake Almanor. The view of this painting is from the eastern part of Lake Almanor looking west at Mt. Lassen. It was a beautiful morning and the scene was fantastic. This is my creation of that memorable time. Ink and watercolor.

Fantasy Forest

This abstract experiment turned into something I feel represents a forest of sorts. I used lots of colors and played with a little wet-in-wet along with some dry brush strokes. As I got into the painting, the more it looked like trees, branches and trunks. Enjoy my fantasy forest. Watercolor.

Amtrak Depot In Davis

The beautiful old railroad depot in Davis, California, is a treat to visit. Updated and well-kept, this depot is very busy and is a stopping point for Amtrak passenger and Capitol Corridor commuter trains. The city of Davis is the home of an acclaimed University and students use bicycles as their choice to get around. Bicycle racks are common at this depot. The area is quiet one minute, then busy with passengers the next, then a freight train will rumble past. I have spent hours sitting around watching people and trains. Ink and watercolor.

A San Francisco Hill

This painting shows a typical landscape found in the city of San Francisco. The structure on a hill is typical of this area but the long flight of stairs seems unique. When the sun is shining over this city everything comes to life unlike when the fog and clouds hover overhead. I drew this from an old manual and not on site. I added my own colors to give the scene more brilliance. One of these days I hope to see this area in person to see if my color of the house matches the color chosen by the owners. Ink and watercolor.

A Little Waterfall

A cold stream of water rushes over the cliff and comes crashing down to the rocks below. The beauty of the rocks adds nice color to the landscape. The sense of solitude is immense and is something only this artist may feel. Enjoy my painting. Ink and watercolor.

Beautiful Mt Lassen In California

Mt. Lassen is a dormant volcano located in Lassen National Park in northern California. It is located south of Mt. Shasta and to the east of Redding  and is near beautiful Lake Almanor. During a June mini-trip, we visited the park and traveled the roadway which takes visitors amazingly close to one of the highest peaks. There were large patches of snow on the ground and pure, clear lakes that were partially frozen. The sunshine was bright and the entire landscape sparkled. Ink and watercolor.

Sea Floor

This underwater scene was done using any color I wanted to use. There was no plan to this painting other than lightly sketching out some of the images then going from light to dark as I continued to complete the image. The fish are made up, the long strands of plant growth are made up and the sea floor is also from my imagination. It is fun to paint this way at times--no structure, no thinking but just enjoying. Ink and watercolor. SOLD

Going Cruising

These three images were done as part of an art class where the theme was Cruising. I demonstrated by sketching from photos to show the students how I do it. The students then went to work and developed some very nice sketches of their own. Ink and watercolor.

Tibetan Terriers

These funny little Tibetan Terriers stopped goofing off long enough to let me draw them.  Actually, I found a nice photograph of them. Much easier to capture them via a photograph. Ink and watercolor.

Sample Art

Doodle art from my "to do" package are shown in this post. I  sketch and paint when I see new ideas for future paintings. These are some of those samples. It remains to be seen if I will ever develop these into larger pieces of art. Ink and watercolor.

Sunset, clouds, islands and ocean with terrific beams of light are combined to make this ink and watercolor image. This painting was done from a sketch I did using various ocean sunset photo images I have on hand.

Hills, Trees And Rocks

Rocks and wild grasses fill in the empty spaces for these trees that have grown on these rolling hills. It's interesting why so many small rocks would be on these hills. This painting displays an interesting palette of browns, grays and greens. Ink and watercolor.

A Cat Named Jasper

This little cat is staring at some one or something in amazement. We do not have cats or dogs but it is fun to draw and paint them. Most of our neighbors have animals so we get our "pet satisfaction" from their pets.
This artwork was done at a time when I felt like being detailed where I could use lots of ink lines. Ink and watercolor. SOLD

Objects And Shadows

I sketched my image on the watercolor paper then randomly stroked watercolor washes on the background. I used some mystic to blot out the color. Because I could see my image, I could add color where I wanted. I used various Sharpies to define my objects then added bold black shadows. Ink and watercolor.

Bristlecone Pine Tree

Bristlecone pine trees are found high in rugged mountain areas and are one of the oldest trees known to man. Ancient bristlecone pine forests exist in several western mountain ranges but the oldest trees live in California's White Mountains. These trees thrive only in the most brutal of environments from 10,000-11,000 foot elevation in areas exposed to bitter cold and winds. Ink and watercolor

A Mission In Capistrano

This serene scene shows a pleasant view of Mission San Juan Capistrano located in southern California. The foreground trees with shade paint a beautiful frame work for the mission in the background. Ink and watercolor.

Bright Spring Day

Colorful mountains and bright green leaves look extra bright as the sun comes out after a spring rainstorm. A few puffy clouds remain but there will be no rain on this colorful landscape for the rest of this day.

This painting was purchased by our friends, John and Jean Hanson who saw it in my office when we hosted a wine party in May. Thank you both!!! Ink and watercolor. SOLD

Eucalyptus Beauties

These beautiful eucalyptus trees are dancing in the wind somewhere in the back country of southern California.

Eucalyptus trees are hardy and grow in warm climates and seem to thrive with minimal rains. They are native trees of Australia and Koala bears love to chomp on the leaves of these trees which is the main source of their diet. These tall trees are high-rooters and grow fast up to 200 feet tall. They are vulnerable to high winds which can make them come tumbling down. Ink and watercolor.

Old Auburn Firehouse 2012

The Old Auburn Firehouse in the old part of Auburn, California, is seen by thousands of visitors each year. Not only is it seen by visitors who stop by the old town area but by many who drive by on I-80 as they drive past Auburn. This old building is a favorite for most artists. Watercolor.

Cactus In The Sunshine

A prickly cactus thrusts upward sprouting new buds in this bright sunshine scene. The cactus plant is fun to draw and easy to replicate even if the drawing is not too exact. Get the colors right and exaggerate the prickly thorns and you have a beautiful warm-weather plant. Ink and watercolor.

Two Tigers

Tiger faces are fun to draw and paint. A tiger's piercing eyes, colorful fur and menacing behavior makes one take notice. These beautiful animals are dwindling in numbers. Poachers are out in great numbers to kill for the fur and other parts for medicinal purposes. Wild tigers are found in Asia. Ink and watercolor.

California Beauty

Located in northern California, Mt. Shasta is seen by all as it looms at the southern end of the Cascade Range at 14,179 feet in elevation. This mountain is relatively isolated from other peaks which helps make it very noticeable to passersby. It offers a beautiful site for travelers on Interstate 5 and Amtrak railroad passengers. This is a volcano and experts say the last eruption took place at least two centuries ago. Ink and watercolor.

Cactus Tree

A very wild cactus tree displays beautiful colors in this desert scene. We are used to seeing normal cactus plants but not cactus in tree form. I enhanced my painting by adding more color along with a greater variety of greens. Ink and watercolor.

Mission Carmel

Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, more commonly known as Mission Carmel, is the second mission in the family of California missions. Located near Highway 1 near the city of Carmel in California, this colorful mission was established in 1770. Mission Carmel has been designated a National Historic Monument. It is also an active parish church. Masses are held daily. Prepared in watercolor with some ink lines.

Grain Elevator Country

A lonely grain elevator appears at a roadside in a wide open countryside. This scene is typical in the USA and Canada where you can drive for miles and miles and soon you will come across a grain elevator. Somewhere near this structure will be some homes and maybe a little town. There are people somewhere nearby. Ink and watercolor.

The Dream

I created this small painting based on Edvard Munch's painting titled "The Scream" which sold for over $119 million on May 2, 2012. I feel very qualified to do a painting like his because it fits in with the whacked-out dreams that I have had for many years--apparently a lot like his dreams.

In my dreams, something scary is always chasing me, the sky is usually red and my legs do not work so I cannot run away. In real life, my wife hears me wimper, wakes me up and tells me to go back to sleep.

Please do not confuse this painting with the real one. Ink and watercolor with some color pencils.

Fruit Bowl

A ton of washes with multiple hues form the major color for this still life of fruits in a bowl. The sketch is applied first in pencil. Washes are painted onto the entire painting. Then I use Sharpies to add more definition to complete the image. Ink and watercolor.

Another Swamp

I finally completed the last of three paintings as part of my " fling with swamps". I posted my first painting, titled Colorful Swamp, on May 4, 2009. Another swamp painting which is the sister to this one was posted on December 15, 2011. All three are on a wall in our guest bedroom and make a nice graphic display. In this painting, there is limited space for boats but tons of beauty with a hint of danger for the unknown. Ink and watercolor.
