Huge Saguaro
My desert scene shows a huge Saguaro cactus typically found in Arizona. The cactus was drawn from a photograph I took during my last Arizona trip. All of the other desert plants and shrubs were drawn from other photo files.
When one stands near these giant cactus plants, it is difficult to understand how these even remain upright. Clusters of these are seen around the area and are commonplace. Birds love these plants to burrow into and make nice homes.

Broadview Farm Bed & Breakfast
We recently returned from a vacation in Vermont where we attended a family reunion. The highlight of our trip was staying at a beautiful bed and breakfast in Danville. Molly Newell, the innkeeper and owner of the Broadview Farm Bed and Breakfast offered outstanding hospitality, super breakfasts and an opportunity to relax at day's end. I drew the sketch during one of our quiet times in the late afternoon. We discovered the place via the Internet, made our reservations early and enjoyed our stay a great deal. Carafes of coffee awaited us every morning at 7 AM. What a pleasure it was to stay at this relaxing home. Sketch done in ink on site and watercolored at home.
Thanks to Gary and Laurie Williams and Dale and Susie Moe who stayed with us at the Broadview for being a part of this memorable time.

The Observation Car
One more "end of the train" car
found on old passenger trains was
called the observation car. These
streamlined cars allowed passengers
to sit in their seats facing backwards to
watch the rails go by and enjoy the countryside.
I never rode in one of these but I always imagined how nice it would be to sit in these nice coaches with some good food and good drink.
Ink and watercolor.

Quiet Reflections
Small paintings are "great tests" before I start my final painting. I think it's because there is no pressure when I know it's "just a test". Mistakes are OK. But, by doing these preliminary images, I discover what I should do or should not do on the final painting. Maybe many of you out there have the same thoughts. Ink and watercolor.

When It's Dusty
During any hot afternoon in the desert, the thunderstorms will appear and are a welcome relief as they cool the day and leave the landscape smelling cooler and fresher. It dampens everything so the earth is no longer dusty.
This small painting developed as I was painting one day in my garage. It was a blazing hot day outside and I would have welcomed a brief, drenching rain. Ink and watercolor.
