A trick I have learned from Cathy (Kate) Johnson www.flickr.com/photos/cathy-johnson/ from one of her fine watercolor instruction books, is to just throw some wet washes down on paper and let the color mix or spread wherever it wants. From those colors, start painting an image--or an image may develop from the basic mix of colors--use your imagination. In this case, I chose flowers. Nothing looked very real but I used more watercolors, color brush pens, and Micron ink pens and I developed my flower images. It's a great way to pull out of a rut.
Check out the work Cathy has produced. If she can't inspire you, no one can!

What a delightful idea! Hope mine turns out as well as yours.
That's a really good idea. I get into those ruts, and then don't do anything at all--and doing something like this would certainly make me feel better.
Fun painting!
Well, thank you so much for your kind words!
Lovely illustration! I love that idea of putting down colors and drawing over it...to see what you get...wow! Thanks for inspiring!
Kate--
What a nice surprise to hear from you. I have admired you and your work for a couple of years now. I have one of your watercolor books which I refer to all the time.
You appear to have accomplished a lot in life and we all appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge.
Thanks for your comment.
Charlene, Coreopsis, Linda--
I appreciate your comments and I hope you try this idea. Ruts are common to all artists and sometimes little tips can get us inspired again. Thanks for stopping by.
